Language Link

A newspaper is a great place to find different points of view. Articles are written by people with different opinions. When you read, it is important to identify the author's point of view. Do you agree with this point of view? Maybe you have a different opinion. The Globe and Mail website gives you access to many articles. Each article is written from a particular point of view. Sometimes is can be difficult to identify a point of view. To improve this skill, I suggest reading news articles on a regular basis. Try to identify the different opinions and think about whether you agree with them or not.

By the end of grade 8, students should be able to identify the point of view in the texts they read. While the Globe and Mail website does not directly teach this skill, it is still a great resource for practicing this skill.

This website teaches the following Grade 8 Language Curriculum expectation:

By the end of Grade 8, students will:
- identify the point of view presented in texts, including increasingly complex or difficult texts; give evidence of any biases they may contain; and suggest other possible perspectives.
